VW MK5 Shift Boot Installation Guide
VW Golf MK5 Shift Boot Installation Guide
These instructions cover the gear shift boot replacement for the 2005–2009 Volkswagen Golf / Jetta MK5. Follow each step carefully. No special tools required beyond a flathead screwdriver and a small hose clamp.
Step 1: Pry Frame & Remove Shift Knob

Carefully pry the shift frame up from the base. Once the frame is off, flip the old boot cover inside out until the shift lever is exposed. Cut the metal ring around the plastic prongs holding the shift knob. Next, carefully pry the plastic prongs up while at the same time pulling up on the shift knob. The knob will then slide up off of the shift lever.
Tip: Take your time prying the frame to avoid cracking plastic clips.
Step 2: Remove Plastic Retaining Sleeve

With the knob off, remove the plastic retaining sleeve which holds the boot cover to the shift knob. Set it aside — you will reuse it with the new boot.
Tip: Keep the retaining sleeve in a safe place; it is essential for reassembly.
Step 3: Swap in the New Leather Boot

Remove the old boot and replace it with the new leather boot cover, feeding it over the shift lever from the top.
Tip: Make sure the boot is oriented correctly (logo or seam facing the desired direction).
Step 4: Reinstall Sleeve & Shift Knob

Slide the plastic retaining sleeve over the new leather cover to secure it, then slide the shift knob back onto the shift lever. Push down firmly until you feel it click into place.
Tip: A firm click confirms the knob is fully seated on the lever.
Step 5: Replace Metal Ring & Reinstall Frame

You will need to replace the metal ring that held the knob in place. An easy replacement is a 1/4" – 5/8" hose clamp — place the clamp around the plastic prongs and tighten securely. Pull the new leather cover over the shifter frame, re-install the frame back in its original position, and you are done!
Tip: A hose clamp is available at any hardware store for under $2.
Leather Care: Apply leather conditioner/UV protector every 4–6 weeks to prevent drying and cracking.
