Release the airbag

The release points sit at the lower rear of the steering wheel. Rotate the wheel so the lower spoke faces upward — it gives you a far better angle than working at full lock, and it's the difference between a five-minute job and a frustrating one.

A small inspection mirror helps you see the release point rather than feeling around blind for it.

Unplug and set the airbag aside

Lift the airbag away from the wheel and unplug its connector. Rest it face-up on a clean surface where it can't be knocked off. Don't let it hang by the wiring.

Remove the factory centre trim

Work the factory trim off with plastic pry tools, taking the clips a section at a time rather than pulling from one corner. Steady, even pressure — the clips will let go without drama if you don't fight them.

Test fit the carbon trim

Offer the R8-style piece up before committing to it. Check that it seats fully, that the gaps around the spokes are even, and that nothing fouls the airbag when it goes back in. Sort out alignment now, not after everything is buttoned up.

Reassemble and check the light

Seat the new trim, route any wiring clear so nothing gets pinched, then reconnect the airbag and press it home until the retainers click. Reconnect the battery.

Turn the ignition on and confirm the airbag warning light goes out after its self-check. If it stays lit, the connector isn't fully seated — stop and go back to it before driving.
