Jetta GLI Grille Removal & LED Emblem Install
On the 2025+ Jetta GLI, the upper grille clips to the top of the bumper cover from behind, so it can't be pulled from the front. The bumper cover comes off first, then the grille separates from it on the bench. While it's apart is also the best time to fit an LED front emblem.
Overview
What you're actually doing.
Pull the bumper cover, lift the grille out of it on the bench, swap the emblem if you're fitting one, then put it all back together.
Why the bumper comes off
The grille clips in from behind.
Its tabs hook under the top edge of the bumper cover, and they're only reachable from the back. There's no way to pop the grille out from the front without breaking them.
Radar
The front radar sits behind the badge.
VW mounts the Front Assist and adaptive cruise radar directly behind the front emblem. Keep wiring and tools clear of it while you work, and read the emblem section before swapping the badge.
Tools
What you need.
Nothing special. Plan on about an hour the first time; the grille tabs are the slowest part.
Part 1
Remove the bumper cover.
Work from the top down and out to the corners. Keep each group of screws separate so they go back where they came from.
Top edge screws
Open the hood. Remove the T25 screws along the top edge where the grille and bumper meet the lock carrier.
Splash shield front edge
From underneath, remove the T25 screws holding the front edge of the splash shield (under-engine cover) to the bumper. Only the front edge needs to come loose.
Wheel-well liners
Turn the wheel lock-to-lock, or pull the wheel, for room. Remove the screws joining the front of the liner to the bumper and fold the liner back. Repeat on the other side.
Release the corners
Remove any screws at the ends of the bumper. Pull each side outward to unclip it from the guide bracket under the headlight, then forward. Go slowly; cold plastic cracks.
Pull it off and unplug
With a helper on the other side, ease the cover forward and unplug the main bumper harness (park sensors, fog lights and any front lighting) before the wiring pulls tight.
Part 2
Separate the grille.
The slowest part of the job. The grille is held by screws on the back plus a row of tabs along its edge.
Lift the grille out of the cover
Lay the bumper face-down on a blanket. Remove the T25 screws on the back of the grille, release its tabs one at a time, then push the grille forward out of the cover.
Releasing the tabs
One tab at a time.
Each tab hooks under the bumper's flange. Press the barb in with a pick or thin screwdriver, then ease that section of grille out before moving to the next tab. Support the grille so it doesn't twist; the tabs snap when they're bent sideways.
Part 3 — Optional
Fit an LED front emblem.
The emblem sits in the center of the grille, so the best time to swap it is while the grille is off the bumper, before you put everything back together.
What you need for the emblem
- Radar-compatible LED emblem made for this Jetta
- Fuse tap or wire tap (see Step D), plus the fuse the kit calls for
- Extra wire, heat-shrink and a ring terminal for the ground
- Zip ties to secure the lead
- Test light or multimeter
- Trim tool and T25 from the main tool list
Emblem steps
Remove the stock emblem
With the grille face-down, unplug the stock emblem if it has a connector, then release its clips or screws from the back and push it out the front. Keep it in case you need to go back to stock.
Test-fit the LED emblem
Before any wiring, make sure it sits flush and square in the grille and every clip lines up.
Route the power lead
Feed the lead through an existing opening in the grille, then along the lock carrier to your power source. Keep it clear of the radiator fan, hood latch and anything hot, and zip-tie it as you go.
Connect power and ground
Follow the kit's wiring instructions. Take power from a switched source (only live with the ignition or parking lights on): a fuse tap, or a wire tap on a switched wire using one of the connectors below. Don't splice into the headlight harness. Ground to a clean, bare chassis point.
Recommended Connectors
Tap the wire without cutting it.
Whichever you use, seal the finished joint with heat-shrink or self-fusing silicone tape. The area behind the grille takes road spray.
Test before reassembly
Turn the ignition on and check that the emblem lights, then turn it off and make sure it goes dark. Fix anything now; reaching it later means pulling the bumper again.
Reassemble and test drive
Refit the grille and bumper using the checklist below, then drive a few miles with traffic ahead. A Front Assist or adaptive cruise warning means the emblem is blocking the radar.
Reassembly
Putting it back together.
Fitting an LED emblem? Do that before you reassemble.
- Inspect every grille tab and bumper clip. Replace anything cracked now; a loose grille rattles and sits crooked.
- Press the grille into the cover until each tab clicks, then refit its T25 screws.
- With the helper holding the cover, plug the bumper harness back in before pushing the cover home.
- Engage both side guide brackets first, then work toward the center.
- Start every screw by hand before tightening any of them, then snug them down without stripping the plastic.
- Check the panel gaps at the headlights and fenders, then test the fog lights, lighting and park sensors (if fitted).
- The Front Assist / adaptive cruise radar sits behind the VW emblem. If it was knocked or moved, it may need calibrating; a dash warning will tell you.
FAQ
Questions, answered.
Can I remove the grille without taking the bumper off?
Not on this generation. The upper grille clips to the top of the bumper cover from behind, so the cover comes off first and the grille separates from it on the bench.
How long does it take?
About an hour the first time. The grille tabs are the slowest part.
Where should the emblem get its power?
From a switched source that's only live with the ignition or parking lights on, using a fuse tap or one of the wire taps in Step D. Don't splice into the headlight harness.
Will an LED emblem affect adaptive cruise or Front Assist?
It can. The front radar sits directly behind the emblem, so only use one sold as radar-compatible for this car. If a Front Assist or adaptive cruise warning comes up after the install, refit the stock emblem.
