Does it fit your car?

This is the 2022-and-newer VW mirror. It is plug and play on every MK8 Golf platform car sold in North America, because all MK8 GTI and Golf R trims leave the factory with a powered auto-dimming mirror on the same connector.

Fitment excludes certain trims. On non-MK8 platforms and on older cars without a factory auto-dimming mirror, an additional harness may be required. If you're unsure, send us your VIN and we'll confirm before you order.

Installation

Do it yourself in 15 minutes.

This is one of the easiest OEM upgrades on the MK8. No wiring, no trim panels beyond the mirror shroud, no scan tool. Work on a warm day or after the car has been in the sun — the plastic shroud flexes far more willingly when it isn't cold.

Part 1 — Swapping the mirror

Turn the ignition fully off Kill the ignition and let the car sit for a minute before unplugging anything. There's no need to disconnect the battery for this job.

Release the mirror shroud The plastic cover around the mirror stalk splits into two halves. Insert a nylon wedge halfway down the seam, then work it upward toward the headliner where the catches sit. This is the only genuinely fiddly part of the job — the clips are stiff and it will feel like you're about to break something before it lets go. Go slow and use steady pressure rather than a sharp snap. Note that 2022 cars have the seam on the sides of the housing while later builds run it down the centre.

Unplug the mirror connector With the shroud off you'll see a single plug feeding the mirror. Press the release tab and pull it free. Same plug, same pinout as the new mirror — this is what makes the swap plug and play.

Twist the old mirror off the windshield button Grip the mirror base — not the glass — and rotate it roughly a quarter turn until it releases from the mount button bonded to the windshield. It comes straight off. Set it aside somewhere safe; the factory mirror is worth real money to another owner.

Fit the new mirror Feed the new mirror's pigtail up through the shroud first, then seat the base squarely on the windshield button and rotate clockwise until it clicks. It can take two or three attempts to get it lined up — that's normal, and forcing it at an angle is the one way to damage the mount. Confirm it's fully seated and doesn't rock.

Reconnect and close up Plug the connector back in until it clicks. Route the wiring so nothing is pinched, then press the shroud halves back together — they should snap home with light thumb pressure. Turn the ignition on and check that the compass segment illuminates and the glass darkens when you shine a light at the rear-facing sensor.

Part 2 — Programming HomeLink

Do this with the ignition on and the car parked in view of your garage door. If you have a helper it goes faster, but it's a one-person job. The free HomeLink app also walks you through pairing interactively and is worth having open.

Clear any stored codes Hold the two outer HomeLink buttons together until the indicator switches to a rapid flash — around 20 seconds. Skip this if the mirror is brand new and has never been trained.

Teach it your remote Hold your existing handheld remote one to three inches from the mirror buttons. Press and hold your chosen HomeLink button and the remote button at the same time. The indicator flashes slowly at first, then switches to a rapid flash — that's your signal the mirror has learned the signal. Release both.

Test it Press the button you just trained. If the door moves, you're finished — that's a fixed-code opener. If nothing happens, your opener uses rolling codes and needs one more step.

Sync the rolling code Find the Learn or Smart button on the opener motor head in the garage, usually behind the light cover, and press it. You then have about 30 seconds: go back to the car and press the trained HomeLink button for two full seconds, release, and repeat up to three times. The door should cycle. This step is where almost every failed HomeLink programming attempt goes wrong — the mirror learned the signal fine, the rolling-code handshake just never got finished.

Let the compass find itself The compass shows a "C" until it calibrates. Drive a couple of slow full circles in an empty lot and give it a few minutes of normal driving — the heading will settle on its own.

Common questions.

Do I need VCDS or OBDeleven to code this in?

No. The MK8 already runs a powered auto-dimming mirror on every trim, so the car sees this as the same device on the same connector. Plug it in and it works.

I have a GTI S — will it still work?

Yes. The S trim is the most common car this gets fitted to. Owners have run this mirror on 2022 GTI S cars with no difference in fit or function versus a factory-equipped Autobahn.

Does it block the USB-C port in my mirror housing?

No. If your car has the factory USB-C connector in the mirror housing cover for a dash cam, this mirror leaves it working.

My car is Canadian — HomeLink was never offered here.

Correct, and that's exactly why this is a popular retrofit north of the border. The hardware is identical; the option simply wasn't on the Canadian order sheet.

Do I need the extra harness I've seen mentioned?

Not on an MK8. VW notes that some applications need an additional harness sold separately — that applies to older platforms without a powered mirror, not to the 2022+ Golf.

Will the dealer install it for me?

They will, though quotes vary wildly — owners have reported anything from a nominal shop charge to several hundred dollars. It's a genuinely straightforward DIY if you have plastic trim tools and fifteen minutes.
