Leichtlauf is Liqui Moly's low-friction workhorse — the oil that goes into most German cars in most German shops. Nothing exotic, just a properly engineered full synthetic that holds its viscosity, keeps the timing chain quiet, and carries every VW approval that matters. Six litres in the box against a 5.5-litre fill, so there's a top-off left over.

Why Leichtlauf.

Leichtlauf translates roughly as "low friction," and that's the whole design brief: a modern synthetic base plus current additive technology, tuned for turbocharged multivalve engines. It's the default choice for a daily-driven GLI. If you want the friction modifier and UV leak tracing, look at the Molygen kit instead.

Built around the Gen3 EA888 as fitted to the MK6 GLI from mid-2013 onward. This platform runs a metal oil pan, so the kit ships with a crush washer rather than a replacement plastic plug.

How-to

Forty minutes in the driveway.

Straightforward job on the GLI — the filter housing sits on top of the engine, so most of it happens without going underneath.

Warm the engine, then lift the car Five minutes of running is enough — warm oil carries suspended contaminants out with it instead of leaving them in the pan. Warm, not hot. Fully up to temperature and you'll burn your forearm on the subframe.

Open the filter housing first Crack the cap on top of the engine with a 32mm socket before you pull the drain plug. This lets the filter housing drain down into the pan so it all comes out in one go.

Drain the pan Pull the plug and let it run until it's down to a slow drip — give it a full ten minutes. Fit the new crush washer before the plug goes back in. The old one is flattened and won't seal reliably a second time.

Swap the filter cartridge and O-rings Pull the old cartridge off the cap and fit the new one. Replace the O-rings that came with the filter and smear them with fresh oil before assembly — a dry O-ring pinches and weeps.

Torque, don't guess Filter cap to 25 Nm, drain plug to 30 Nm into the metal pan. The filter housing is plastic and unforgiving — overtighten it and you'll be buying a housing, which costs more than the kit.

Fill, run, and recheck Add roughly 5.5 litres, run the engine 30 seconds, shut it down and wait five minutes, then check the dipstick and top to the upper mark. Look under the car for drips before you call it done.
