Overview
Cheap insurance for an expensive key.
A Golf 8 key lives in a pocket with coins, other keys and whatever else is in there, and the plastic shows every bit of it. This is Volkswagen's own silicone cover — it takes the scratches so the key doesn't, and a replacement fob costs several hundred dollars with the coding.
Genuine
VW's own accessory, not a copy.
Part number 5H0-087-012-041, made by Volkswagen Zubehör GmbH in Dreieich, Germany. The GTI logo is done properly rather than printed on and peeling off in a month.
Protection
Takes the abuse instead of the key.
Silicone absorbs the scuffs and knuckle-height drops that put scratches and stress cracks into the fob housing. The cover is the consumable, which is the whole idea.
Function
Buttons still work through it.
The silicone flexes over each button, so lock, unlock and boot all press normally. No cutouts needed, and nothing blocks the signal.
Fitting
On and off in seconds.
It stretches over the fob by hand — no tools, no adhesive, nothing to dismantle. Peel it off just as easily when you need to change the battery.
Fitment
Will it fit your key?
Cut for the Golf 8 three-button remote. Button count is the thing to check — VW uses more than one fob across the range and they aren't interchangeable.
| Key | Buttons | Fitment |
|---|---|---|
| Golf 8 / GTI / R remote | 3 | Direct Fit |
| Golf 8 remote | 4 or more | Does Not Fit |
| Golf 7 / 7.5 remote | — | Different Fob |
| Other MQB models | — | Send A Photo |
Care
Keeping it looking new.
Silicone is easy, but it does attract lint and it doesn't like solvents.
| Do | Don't |
|---|---|
| Rinse with warm water and mild soap | Clean it with solvent or brake cleaner |
| Dry fully before refitting | Refit it damp and trap moisture against the fob |
| Peel it off to change the battery | Force the fob apart with the cover on |
| Lift a lint-covered cover off and rinse it | Pick at the edges with a knife |

FAQ
Questions, answered.
Do the buttons still work?
Yes. The silicone flexes over each button and presses through normally. Range isn't affected either.
Can I change the battery with it on?
Peel the cover off first, swap the battery, then stretch it back on. It only takes a few seconds and avoids stressing the cover.
Is the logo printed on?
No. It's formed into the cover as part of VW's own accessory, so it doesn't wear off at the edges the way printed aftermarket covers do.
Will it fit a four-button key?
No. This is cut specifically for the three-button Golf 8 remote. Count the buttons on your fob before ordering — it's the one thing that catches people out.
Does it come in other colours?
Black and blue are what we stock, both with the GTI logo. Pick your colour above.
What's the return policy?
Returns are handled under our standard refund policy. Get in touch before sending anything back so we can sort it quickly.
